The story behind us and this piece of West Coast history.

It was meant to be....

In 2021 we fell in love with the West Coast of Tasmania and now call it home…..

Not long after arriving I saw that the old church was for sale. It was a little neglected and I just felt strangely compelled to save this piece of history.

I found out later that the church pew we acquired with the purchase of our own house in Zeehan was actually one of the church pews from this very church which I sat on every morning to drink my coffee!

Fun Fact: the church was designed by Alexander North, a well known Australian church architect born in 1858.

A restoration project not for the faint of heart.

The daunting prospect of undertaking such a project did not go without some sleepless nights. Although my husband is a civil engineer too, he did not have the same drive I had to take on such a challenge. Restoration started almost immediately with structural strengthening work and a new roof. The old rusted tin roof was only held on with a few nails so it was no surprise to me that a couple of sheets blew off with the wild west coast weather.

All the stained glass windows bar the large feature window have been restored by a very talented local lady. Thank you Brenda!

The next phase of the project is engaging an architect and building surveyor to find out exactly what needs to happen next.

We hope to turn this former Anglican church into a stunning residence or who knows, maybe another visitor accommodation so everyone can enjoy her heritage craftmanship.
